Your going to hear a lot of people say you need to know HTML in order to make a great website. Guess what you don't. Heck most web hosting service may actually help you set up your site in a way you wont ever need to know a single bit of HTML.
However know some HTML will help you immensely, say for some reason a link doesn't work you can go look at it and see whats wrong, without having to redo all the work you did to do it possibly or calling someone to fix it. You can work much more quickly in a HTML editor when making your site.
